As I'm sure you've heard by now Apple announced some additions to it's mobile line up yesterday and I thought it prudent to provide a break down of what's new and different.
First up is the new iPad Mini:
- Same processor as the iPad 2nd Generation
- Smaller 7.9 inch screen
- Upgraded cellular radio to include global 4G LTE data support (iPad 2nd Gen. only supported 3G data)
- Non-retina 1024x768 display
- Apple's new proprietary Lightning connector
Should you buy one? Well that depends...
If you have the original iPad 1st Generation - it probably wouldn't hurt unless a larger screen is what you're looking for. But all early indications are that while this screen is smaller the pixel density and resolution is just right and looks amazing.
If you have an iPad 2 - the only benefit you would gain would be the option of 4G LTE data - if you have no interest in paying an extra monthly charge for data then this won't concern you. The only other benefit would be the smaller form factor.
If you have an iPad 3rd Generation - I, personally, see no benefit to the mini for you. You will get a downgraded screen, a downgraded processor, as well as a downgrade in form factor. Unless form factor is a HUGE factor for you - I'd say stick with what you've got.
Next is the iPad with Retina Display (aka: 4th Generation iPad):
- New A6X processor - supposedly 2x faster than the current A5X Processor that's in the iPad 3rd Generation.
- Same 9.7 inch retina screen
- Upgraded cellular radio to include global 4G LTE data support (iPad 3rd Gen. only supported 4G LTE data in North America)
- Apple's new proprietary Lightning connector
Should you buy one? Well - you don't really have a choice. Apple killed off the 3rd Gen iPad so this is the new top dog!
If you have the original iPad 1st Generation - you will definitely see an improvement in performance (less lag/slowness) as well as the retina display is gorgeous. If you're still rocking the original iPad 1st Generation? I say go for it - the extra $100 from the iPad 2 to the iPad 4th Gen is well worth it in my opinion.
If you have an iPad 2 - again the only way to go is up unless form factor and price is a huge concern for you.
If you have an iPad 3rd Generation - Unless you're the type of person that MUST have the newest model when it comes out, don't fret. The 4th Gen is only a minor revision over what you have now and your 3rd Gen should last you a good bit longer before I'd worry about upgrading it.
Hopefully I've provided some insight and clarity to those who had questions about Apple's latest additions to their iPad lineup!
